Concussion Awareness

The BWYAA is in compliance with House Bill 143 which went into effect on April 26, 2013. In summary, individuals are not allowed to serve as a coach or referee for a youth sports organization, whether volunteer or paid, without successfully completing an online training program in recognizing the signs and symptoms of concussions and head injuries provided by the Ohio Department of Health. Individuals may also hold a Pupil Activity Permit (PAP) from the Ohio Department of Education. Renewal is required every three years. In addition, parents are to be provided the CDC Concussion Awareness information sheet on a yearly basis.

The BWYAA exceeds these requirements and requires our Head Coaches to complete the course yearly through the National Alliance for Youth Sports. The information learned from this on-line tool is reinforced by our Health Partner, Nationwide Children's Hosptial Sports Medicine, during the Head Coaches Clinic at the beginning of each season. Our parents acknowledge receipt of this information sheet during the on-line registration process to ensure everyone is informed and know their responsibilities in recognizing the symptoms of concussions.

Please contact your Head Coach or any member of our Board of Directors for additional information.
